Stepping Outside Our Box: Respect Is Part of the Journey đŸŒđŸ€Ž

Four generations. A bigger world. A respectful heart.

One of the greatest gifts of traveling is discovering that the world is so much bigger than what we’re used to. Stepping outside our own backyard gives us a chance to see everyday life through someone else’s eyes. It reminds us that the routines, traditions, and ways of doing things we know best are only one small part of a much bigger world.

Our family’s travels have taken us to Spain, Portugal, Japan, destinations in Africa, Great Britain—including England—Ireland, France, and Greece. Across those journeys, our family story includes four generations: my grandparents, my mom, me, and my son. I took my grandparents to Spain, England, and Portugal, and I’ve also had the joy of traveling with my mom and son. These weren’t all the same trip or the same group of travelers. What connects them is the opportunity to share experiences, make memories, and keep learning together.

There is something special about experiencing the world across generations. Each person brings a different perspective. A place can spark a memory for one person and introduce a completely new idea to another. The conversations we have along the way can matter just as much as the destination. Sharing that opportunity with people we love is a gift we don’t take for granted.

When our family visited specific places in Africa and Japan, respecting the local customs meant wearing full-coverage clothing—even when temperatures were over 100°F. Was it hot? Absolutely! đŸ„” But here’s the thing: we were visitors in someone else’s home. We weren’t there to tell people how they should live, dress, or practice their traditions. We were there to experience their world, learn something new, and show respect.

Those experiences belonged to the particular places we visited. They aren’t a rule for all of Japan, and they certainly don’t describe every country or community across Africa. Customs can differ from one community or setting to the next. Part of traveling thoughtfully is learning what is appropriate for the actual place you’re entering, instead of assuming one experience tells the whole story.

Sometimes respecting another culture means dressing differently. Sometimes it means learning proper etiquette, following the expectations of a particular site, or simply listening before making assumptions. Taking a little time to learn before we arrive can help us be more considerate guests. And when we’re unsure, a polite question and a willingness to listen can go a long way.

We don’t have to understand everything immediately, and we don’t have to agree with or practice every tradition ourselves. But we can always choose kindness and respect. You don’t have to lose who you are to respect who someone else is. Keeping our own beliefs and being thoughtful toward the people welcoming us can exist together.

The world doesn’t revolve around our way of doing things. Imagine how much we could learn from one another if we stopped approaching differences with “my way or the highway” and started approaching them with curiosity. Try an unfamiliar food if it’s right for you. Learn a few words in another language. Listen to the stories. Respect the customs of the places you visit. Give yourself permission to be a learner.

That is something we want to pass down through our family, too. Travel offers a chance to practice patience, notice different perspectives, and understand that our familiar way isn’t the only way. Different doesn’t automatically mean wrong. And no single encounter can tell us everything about a person, a community, or a culture.

We share this world with billions of people, each with their own histories, traditions, and experiences. What a beautiful opportunity we have to learn from one another. Thinking outside our backyard—and outside the box—can begin with one simple decision: to meet someone else’s world with an open mind and a respectful heart.

Beyond Our Own Backyard is a continuing part of our family’s story: four generations, meaningful memories, and lessons we carry home. We’ll share more of those reflections as the series continues. For now, we’re starting with this reminder: the journey is richer when respect comes with us.

Sharing Our Family With Yours — one beautifully imperfect day at a time. đŸ€Ž
