Sometimes the best family adventures begin with absolutely no plan. Just an afternoon, a little free time and someone asking, “Want to go for a drive?”
There does not have to be a destination. Maybe you take a road you have never traveled, stop at a little park or find something interesting enough for everyone to get out and explore. The best part may be a conversation along the way.
The beauty of going nowhere in particular
So much of life is spent rushing between school, work, appointments and errands. A Sunday drive can be different: no expensive tickets, no packed schedule, no pressure to make every minute exciting.
Five things to try
- Let family members take turns choosing the direction at safe intersections.
- Play the alphabet game with letters on road signs.
- Look for colorful trees, barns, pumpkins or animals.
- Bring apple slices, crackers or a homemade treat for a simple picnic.
- Ask everyone: “What is something you would like us to do together before the year ends?”
The unplanned stop may become everyone’s favorite part. Family adventures are not always about how far you go, but how much you enjoy being together.
From our family to yours: Does your family enjoy spontaneous drives, or do you prefer a planned destination?
